Designing a Golf Course

A golf course is a series of holes on greens, sands and other surfaces on a big piece of land specially designed for a game of golf. A standard golf course has 18 holes while some have 9, 27 or 36 holes. Additionally, a Par 3 exists. There are many different ways of styles of designing a golf course depending on the needs and budget. Here is a brief description of a standard golf course.

The first section is known as tee-box where there is usually more than one box available for the players to place their ball. The tee-box is raised slightly higher than the ground and is usually used at selected areas such as the ladies’ tee, men’s tee and juniors’ tee.

Next is the fairway which is located between the teeing area and the greens. This location is where players are to be more adventurous during their game. And between the tee-box area and fairway is the rough where you see grass cut higher than the fairway.

For the greens or also known as putting green is usually cut short so that the golf ball can roll a distance.

There are many types of grass that a golf course can use such as rye grass, Zoysiagrass, Bent grass and Kentucky bluegrass. Although there are many different types of grass but not all are suitable for all climates.

The type of hazards of the course can either be water hazards such as rivers and lakes. Man made hazards such as bunkers that are usually filled with sands and may be slightly covered can exist too as well as natural hazards such as closely compacted vegetations.

Building a golf course is costly not only on the layout but also the maintenance. For every cup to collect the golf ball can be found within the greens with a diameter of 4.25 inches each and at least 3.94 inches deep. You will know there is a cup when you see a pole with a flag positioned at the specific place.

In every golf course, there must be entrance signs available for references to the players.

Gleneagles Golf Course

 Just a short drive from the Duchally resort run by Club la Costa you will find one of Scotland’s and even the UK’s best golf courses.  Gleneagles is actually made up of three championship courses as well as a 9 hole course.  This course was the brain child of the then General Manager of Caledonian Railway, Donald Matheson over 75 years ago. 

His aim to was not only have superb golf courses but also a wonderful hotel, and before this building had been completed the King’s and Queen’s courses were designed by the then legendary James Braid.  The courses that you see today are located in an idyllic mountain setting with wilderness still surrounding them. Both the King’s and Queen’s courses differ greatly from many of today’s courses in that they are constructed on gravel and sand just as the old style links courses were. 

Then in 1928 the third course was opened but this time it was a nine hole and is suitable for players of all levels today to try.  However in 2001 the PGA Centenary Course was built, this one being the creation of the world renowned golf player, Jack Nicklaus.  It was built to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Professional Golfers Association. 

As you would expect the new course is certainly different from many others built.  The course measures a total of 7,088 yards and each hole has five different points from which one can tee off from.  So even someone who hasn’t played golf for very long could if they wanted attempt to play around or two on this one. 

In 2014 the PGA Centenary Course will be the venue where the Ryder Cup Matches between Europe and the USA will take place.  The whole event lasts for a total of 3 days.  On the first day the 8 foursome’s matches occur, then on day two the 8 four ball matches happen.  Whilst on the final day this is when the 12 singles matches occur.

If you are looking for some great Kamloops Golf Courses to play, I highly recommend Tobiano Golf Course.

Hi, my name is Jason Smith and I recently had the pleasure of playing Tobiano Golf Course in Kamloops for the first time. I am an avid golfer from Calgary Alberta who plays between 20-30 rounds per year, and carry a 6 handicap. I was fortunate enough to take some holidays in the Okanagan this summer, and played most of the top golf courses in the area. I had heard about Tobiano from a friend, but I was not expecting anything extraordinary from the other premier courses I am used to playing. To my surprise, I experienced a truly amazing course which exceeded my expectations in every way, and I now consider this to be the best golf course in Western Canada. I was so impressed with every aspect of this course, I decided to give my testimonial in the form of this video.

From the moment I drove up to the club house, I was taken aback from the natural beauty of the landscape. In the middle of endless desert-like scrubland, I found rich dark-green links nestled in between, while running alongside the crystal blue waters of Kamloops Lake. The view approaching the course was stunning enough for me to stop the car and take in the view for a moment.

Needless to say I was anxious to play, and I wasted no time checking in and heading to the practice range for my warmup. The range featured perfectly stacked pyramids of balls, accurate distance markers, and real greens with flag-sticks to target. Despite some poor warmup shots, I really felt like a pro on this range.

Moving onto the first tee box, I had to choose from one of the five tees to play. I was feeling pretty confident with my game, so I chose the Iron tees, which are the second longest tees at just over 7100 yards. Stepping onto the tee box was like stepping onto a green. They were flat and short-cut, and well maintained, giving me one less worry getting off the tee with success.

Heading out to the fairway was no different. These fairways were definitely the best I have ever played on, and striking the ball on them was a treat. My only regret was hitting fewer of them than I would have liked! These fairways were again like greens, they provided soft landings, and allowed for amazing backspin on well struck approach shots. I really felt bad taking divots on these fairways, cause they were just to nice to markup!

On occasion I hit a green in regulation, and when I did there were always opportunities to score well. Perfectly cut and fairly fast, the greens were challenging but not impossible. Putts were rolling consistently and true, and although birdies were at a premium for me on this day, I only recorded one three putt, and I certainly had my share of close encounters with the hole!

Throughout the round I found myself breathless. If it wasn’t the stunning views overlooking the lake, it was the multiple ravines and narrow rolling fairways that would leave me hanging on a regular basis. Visually the course is quite intimidating, however it is not unforgiving. There is a good variety of holes that let you hit all the clubs in your bag (if you dare), and if you did have a bad hole, one look off into the view would ease the pain a little. From time to time the local wild life would make an appearance to watch, or make fun of me (I couldn’t always tell).

When the round finally ended, it was time to treat myself to a meal in the clubhouse. Walking in the place was just as exciting as the golf. After being greeted at the door by a beautiful hostess (who unfortunately did not want to be captured on this video), I entered the massive doors and checked out the fully-stocked pro shop off to the right, which had a great selection of sportswear and supplies. Heading into the restaurant I noticed the great patio overlooking the course and the lake. I’m positive this was the best seat anywhere on the course, so I chose to sit outside and enjoy the 19th hole and an amazing meal!

During my round, I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of local Kamloops golfers playing Tobiano for the first time. They gave me some feedback of their experiences with other Kamloops golf courses, and were happy to share their thoughts about the course with me on camera…

To wrap things up, I have to comment on the service. I am happy to say that the service and staff were incredible and attentive. I could not even get close to finishing my drink between holes as the kart girl was too fast making her rounds every 2-3 holes. The course marshal actually kept the pace of the game on time (unlike most course marshals I run into), and was friendly enough to stop to give some much needed hole advice from time to time. Overall there wasn’t a single bad experience I can talk about today, and the experience was truly amazing. I want to personally thank the staff and ownership of Tobiano for giving me this experience, and I hope this video helps others find there way to your course for the same treatment!

Oh, and for those who are curious as to my final score, that will have to remain between me and the golf course! Until next year Tobiano…until next year!
